About the Role
Our client is seeking a Game Economy & Systems Designer to own the numbers behind casual games, including currencies, rewards, progression, level difficulty and monetisation. The role will build balancing models, turn them into configuration tables, work with developers to put them into the game, and use live data to adjust them after release.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and balance in-game currencies, resources, rewards, item values and upgrade costs.
- Design ad-reward placements and values, such as rewarded videos for extra lives, boosters or currency, and balance them against in-app purchases so that both fit the player progression and neither undermines the other.
- Build progression and difficulty curves that give players clear goals and a steady pace of challenge and reward.
- Build and maintain balancing models and simulations in Excel, VBA and Python to test changes before release.
- Define reward formulas and drop or probability tables, and check the results with developers and quality assurance after implementation.
- Design event rewards and pricing for limited-time offers that fit the core economy.
- Write numerical design documents and configuration tables, and keep table structures, naming and validation rules consistent across versions.
- Track retention, conversion, lifetime value, average revenue per user and return on investment after each release; identify bottlenecks and propose improvements.
- Support the testing and review of balancing changes and report on the results.
- Work closely with product, development, quality assurance and operations teams.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics or a related discipline.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in game economy, numerical or systems design, including game balancing and progression design.
- Strong Excel skills, with hands-on experience using VBA or Python for modelling, simulation or data analysis.
- Experience analysing game data and using insights to improve game balance and player experience.
- Ability to prepare clear numerical documentation and work effectively with developers and non-technical teams.
- Good command of written and spoken English. Proficiency in written Simplified Chinese and spoken Mandarin will be an advantage.
- Experience with casual/mobile games, international markets, live operations, ad monetisation or probability-based reward systems would be an advantage.
